Sciba Named PWHL Detroit’s First Head Coach

Detroit’s still-unnamed PWHL expansion team announced its first head coach on Thursday, Westland-native Josh Sciba.

Oh we’re locked in 🔒

Josh Sciba will lead the team as our first Head Coach! The Michigan native joins after serving two seasons as an assistant coach for the PWHL’s New York Sirens and as an assistant coach for the 2026 U.S. Olympic Women’s Hockey Team that won gold in Milan.

Sciba comes to Detroit after a pair of seasons as an assistant coach with the New York Sirens.

Between Manon Rheaume as GM and now Sciba, it seems like existing Michigan ties are a priority for incoming staff members.

We probably shouldn’t expect that trend to hold as the roster is built out starting next week. We’ve already heard that some top Michigan talent will not be available and, with a full roster to populate, relying on natives of the area won’t be enough. It will be interesting to see how geography impacts things, however.
