Red Wings Name Horcoff Interim General Manager

Two months after announcing that Steve Yzerman would leave his role as Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Detroit Red Wings, the team named his temporary replacement, elevating assistant general manager Shawn Horcoff to interim general manager.

Horcoff will retain his role as general manager of the Grand Rapids Griffins and remains a candidate for the full-time position with the Red Wings.

I said what I had to say about this on social media last week.

The time to give Horcoff the “interim” title was two months ago, immediately after announcing Yzerman’s “transition” out of the GM position. Doing it now, after a two month search, when candidates have already been interviewed – with some of them reportedly having been told that they’re no longer being considered and another publicly removing himself from consideration – makes it look a whole lot like something has gone wrong with the search.

How, after two months, are you not close enough to naming Yzerman’s permanent replacement that you can’t just finish up that process?

Additionally, Horcoff was reportedly already handling the day-to-day of running the team. If this is about getting Simon Edvinsson signed before the CBA changes tonight and eliminates the possibility of an eight-year deal, Horcoff could already do that without formally naming him the interim GM.

It’s all just so freaking weird.
