The Detroit Red Wings announced on Friday the signing of defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo.
As per club policy, financial terms were not officially announced. The two-year deal is reportedly worth a total of $5 million for a $2.5 million cap hit under the current collective bargaining agreement.
The 29-year-old Colaiacovo is a veteran of 370 career NHL games. He was drafted 17th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2001 and spent parts of six seasons with the Leafs before being traded to the St. Louis Blues in November of 2008.
In the past three seasons he’s never played more than 67 games due to injury.
The deal gives the team seven NHL-quality defensemen under contract heading into an expected lockout that could cancel at least part of the 2012-13 season.
