Henrik Zetterberg scored two goals for the second game in a row, heading his Detroit Red Wings to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins.

En route to the win, Detroit outshot Pittsburgh, 39-17.

Zetterberg’s first goal opened the game’s scoring 44 seconds past the midway point of the first period. With the Red Wings on a power play, Zetterberg drove to the net to knock a rebound off Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and just barely over the goal line.

After a series that saw a big stop by Fleury matched by a breakaway save by Detroit goaltender Chris Osgood, Zetterberg put the Wings up by two.

The Swede scored his second of the night shorthanded with 3:50 left in the second period. He intercepted a pass from Penguins defender Sergei Gonchar and broke in all alone on Fleury, faking to his forehand before cutting back on his backhand. He skated around the sprawling goalie and lifted a shot into the top of the net.

Nicklas Lidstrom scored Detroit’s third goal, another power play tally. At 6:29 of the third period, he took a pass in the left circle from Pavel Datsyuk and sent a slap shot over Fleury’s shoulder.

Mark Recchi put in his own rebound with 29 seconds remaining in the game for Pittsburgh’s lone goal.

Osgood finished the game with 16 saves on the 17 shots he faced, while Fluery made 36 stops on Detroit’s 39 shots.

Detroit went two-for-eight on the power play and held the Penguins without a special teams goal on five chances with the extra attacker, including two lengthy 5-on-3 opportunities.

The Red Wings will be back in action on Tuesday when the begin a Southeast Division road trip by visiting the Atlanta Thrashers.

Detroit captain Steve Yzerman did not play Monday night, he is expected to miss three weeks with a groin injury… Injured center Robert Lang could return to play by the end of the coming road trip.
