2026 Red Wings Development Camp Jersey Number Notes

185

The Red Wings long ago stopped announcing jersey numbers alongside the roster of players at their annual Development Camp. Inevitably, however, some member of the media posts photos of the roster printout available in-arena, which does include numbers. This year that was Ken Kal.

As I always say, jersey numbers at Development Camp are ususally meaningless. Sometimes they show something interesting, though. I think at least one of this year’s numbers is a sign of something to come.

A good rule of thumb is that usually prospects won’t be assigned numbers of players who spent last season with Detroit or Grand Rapids. The numbers of pending unrestricted free agents are often given out, even if that player might re-sign with the Detroit organization. Sometimes goalies see their numbers loaned out but that’s been less the case since Detroit started giving prospect goalies numbers in the 60s.

And free agent camp invitee numbers are usually even less indicative than numbers for players who are actually in the Detroit organization. So let’s start with those, and then look at what might be interesting.

Michael Dec gets the #82 that was worn in last fall’s main camp by Griffins signee Gabriel Seger. Yegor Vinogradov takes #49 from Viking Gustavsson Nyberg, a free agent invite last summer. Salvatore Viviano is wearing the #75 that was previously assigned to Austin Baker. Yaroslav Busygin has taken the #52 of Red Wings legend Travis Hamonic. Grand Rapids-contracted Justice Christensen keeps the #83 he had in the main camp last year, which was assigned to Fisher Scott in last summer’s Development Camp, with Scott taking over the #51 of Ian Mitchell. Cade Christenson’s #76 was assigned to Nicklas Andrews last fall and Owen Mehlenbacher in Development Camp, with Mehlenbacher switching to the #73 worn by Liam Kilfoil in the main camp and by Brennan Ali last summer.

For the goalies, Albin Boija gets #60, last assigned to Jan Bednar in main camp in 2024. Will Keane gets the #34 that Carter Mazur wore last season. Semyon Konopsky gets the #33 of the recently-traded Sebastian Cossa.

Detroit’s 2026 first-round pick, J.P. Hurlbert, gets his usual #2 (no matter how ridiculous I think it looks for a forward to wear it), last worn by Olli Maatta. Victor Plante has the #48 previously worn by Jonatan Berggren. Michal Orsulak gets the #80 worn last fall by Michal Pradel, who switches to #61 (previously assigned to Landon Miller). Adam Levac’s #81 was previously assigned to Jakub Rychlovsky. Fifth-round pick Beckham Edwards has been given the #50 worn by Dominik Shine before he switched to his usual #65. Luka Arkko’s #95 was worn in the full camp last fall by Alex Kannok Leipert. Finally, Myles Brosnan takes the #3 formerly belonging to Justin Holl.

Nikita Tyurin, who was drafted in 2025 but didn’t come to Development Camp that year, makes his debut wearing the #97 last assigned to Ross Mitton in 2024.

For the returnees, Ali goes from #73 to the #38 that has been assigned to Antti Tuomisto. Baker, having lost #75, goes to the #63 last assigned to Alexandre Doucet. Carter Bear keeps the #41 he wore in main camp last fall, having already had to change from #21 to make room for James van Riemsdyk. With JvR a pending free agent, Max Plante takes over #21, leaving his former #84 unassigned. Eddie Genborg had previously worn Bear’s #41; he takes #90 from Michal Svrcek. Svreck, meanwhile, moves to #64, which was assigned in last fall’s camp to Carson Bantle and previously to Brady Cleveland.

Noah Dower Nilsson will wear #74, which was worn last fall by Vincent Collard (presumably Ondrej Becher will get #57 back in camp after having loaned it to David Perron). Charlie Forslund gets #67 from Dylan James, having lost #65 to Shine. Jesse Kiiskinen goes from #72 to the #79 last assigned to Jack Phelan. Phelan, meanwhile, takes #87, worn by Wyatt Kennedy last fall and John Whipple last summer. Whipple moves to #46 to facilitate that, last worn by Jeff Petry.

Grayden Robertson-Palmer keeps #94. Brent Solomon gives up #42 for #70, with #42 unassigned. Cleveland, having lost #64, takes the #56 of Erik Gustafsson. Larry Keenan returns in #86, having loaned it to Maxim Dirracolo last fall. Will Murphy is back in #89. Rudy Guimond is back in #68.

As I said, there are a couple things that I find interesting there.

An extremely minor one is that Solomon switched from the relatively-normal #42 with it going unassigned. That might mean that a roster player is planning on taking it. Or it could just be another case of prospects shifting around, like so many cases above.

Also somewhat interesting is that Alexandre Doucet is a pending restricted free agent but his #63 has been reassigned. Restricted free agents usually keep their numbers. Does this mean he’s on the way out? As of this writing, Detroit’s qualifying offers haven’t been announced, so it could mean that the Wings don’t plan to qualify him. Or he could come back with a new number. Or, again, it could be meaningless.

Similarly, pending restricted free agent Carter Mazur’s #34 was assigned. Mazur’s number has bounced around a bunch and it’s particularly interesting because he famously preferred #43 in honor of Darren Helm but keeps losing it. He had it in his first camps, lost it to Mark Pysyk (who never actually wore it in a game) and came back in #32, switched back to #43 in time to make his debut wearing it and immediately lost it to Petr Mrazek, then showed up in camp last year wearing #34 despite Mrazek having been dealt, with John Leonard assigned #43. So is Keane getting #34 a sign that Mazur has changed again? If John Leonard weren’t signed for another year, I’d have expected Mazur to take #43 back.

I’ll throw a wild prediction out there: Mazur convinced Leonard to give him #43 and Leonard is taking #42.

Finally, the rumor is that Emmitt Finnie is planning to change his number, having established himself in Detroit. He prefers #9 and has fallen back on #29 when necessary but neither of those are available in Detroit. I thought he might taken #90 – following in the footsteps of Mike Modano and Stephen Weiss – but Svrcek getting that number could mean otherwise.
