Stupid Stat of the Day: The Red Wings are unbeaten all-time in their first game of the season when they closed out the previous season by allowing eight or more goals.

This has happened four times previously. Detroit’s last regular season game of the 1945-46 season was an 11-7 loss to the Maple Leafs and they opened the 1946-47 season tying those same Leafs, 3-3. The Wings closed out 1968-69 with a 9-5 loss in Chicago, then opened 1969-70 with a 3-2 win over Toronto. They closed out that regular season with another 9-5 loss (this time to the Rangers) and opened 1970-71 with a 5-3 win over the Seals. Finally, they dropped an 8-3 decision to the Jets to wrap up 1982-83 and opened 1983-84 with a 6-6 tie with Winnipeg.
