  • Nothing going for the Wings tonight. Golf it into the zone, chase it down, get hit, cleared.

    Clark Rasmussen December 28, 2011 1:16 AM
  • Yep

  • Good jump to start the period for Detroit.

    Clark Rasmussen December 28, 2011 1:36 AM
  • Howard looking absolutely Hasek-like.

    Clark Rasmussen December 28, 2011 1:48 AM
  • No kidding!

  • As much as I want to complain because of how many times it’s gone against Detroit, that was the right call on the second goal. Ref just happened to be in the right spot to see the puck free. Free puck means no whistle, no intent to blow, none of that.

  • A little bit like the real Captain from Lidstrom there. “If no one else is going to do this, I’ll do it my damned self.”

    Clark Rasmussen December 28, 2011 2:10 AM
  • Tonight, the role of Tomas Holmstrom will be played by Pavel Datsyuk.

  • Holy Christ. Important 56 seconds right there.

  • Props to whoever is running the music tonight and just played O Fortuna!

I feel like I should go away from my tv again in hopes that the Blues won’t tie it again.

  • Hell. f*cking. Yes.

    That’s all.

  • Props to whoever is running the music tonight and just played O Fortuna!

Problem is sometimes they play it with like 7 minutes left. Best saved for the final minute.

  • WTF was that!?

  • This game started out like the other two the Red Wings and Blues have played this season. St. Louis controlling the boards, Detroit unable to gain the zone, no offensive flow for the Wings.

The Red Wings ground it out as the game went on, though. They kept pushing into the Blues’ zone and started winning some battles, which led to getting some pucks on net. Nicklas Lidstrom got the Wings on the board with one such chance and from them on it was pretty much all Detroit.

Overall, it was a pretty entertaining game. As a Wings fan I’d like to have seen them do a lot of things better but some of that isn’t a sign of what Detroit wasn’t doing but a sign of what the Blues were doing. Brian Elliot had a very good game in the St. Louis net and the team is committed to controlling the puck in a way they haven’t been before.

On the Detroit side of things, Jimmy Howard kept his team in it. He made several key stops, including a Hasek-like flopping save off the side of his mask. Then Pavel Datsyuk put the team on his back.

The Red Wings needed that win and they might have needed to win it like that. It’s one thing to blow a team out, 8-2. It’s another to grind out a comeback win. Detroit hasn’t done the latter much this season and doing so tonight shows that they can.

I should mention Joakim Andersson, making his first-ever NHL appearance. I think I remember hearing his name twice. That means he didn’t screw anything up, which is good, but it also means he didn’t do much.

  • The Red Wings host the St. Louis Blues tonight in the second of Detroit’s four important Central Division matchups this week.

The Blues will be without TJ Oshie while the Red Wings are missing Tomas Holmstrom, who is expected to miss at least a week with a groin injury suffered in last night’s 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators. Joakim Andersson has been called up from the Grand Rapids Griffins to take Holmstrom’s spot in the lineup. Tonight will be Andersson’s NHL debut.

No other lineup changes are expected for the Red Wings. Jimmy Howard will get the start in goal on back-to-back nights and Mike Commodore remains in the lineup on the blue line, with Jakub Kindl the healthy scratch.

Game time is 7:30. TV is FSD locally and Versus nationally.

  • Blues had nothing going until Daniels and Khan mentioned how bad it is. Just sayin’

    Clark Rasmussen December 28, 2011 12:51 PM
  • I have an idea… Let’s see how Blues can tackle Datsyuk at one time… Its obvious what kind of night we are in for.

    SYfanSD December 28, 2011 12:53 PM
  • Helm… One on four… Such a fast kid!
