Red Wings Blank Wild for Second Consecutive Win

The Detroit Red Wings scored twice in a 37-second span of the second period Friday night and goaltender Dominik Hasek did not allow a goal as they skated to a 3-0 win over the Minnesota Wild.

It was Detroit’s second win in a row after ending a five-game losing streak on Monday night against the Dallas Stars.

Dan Cleary got the Red Wings on the board at 7:18 of the second period, two seconds after the expiration of a hooking penalty to Todd White. Robert Lang threaded a pass from the bottom of the left faceoff circle to Cleary in the slot for a shot into the open side of the net.

Cleary took a stick to the face on the play, resulting in some lost teeth and a four minute penalty to Pascal Dupuis.

Just 37 seconds into the power play, a blast from the point by Nicklas Lidstrom beat goalie Manny Fernandez.

Cleary added a second goal of the game at 4:00 of the third period, a tally originally credited to Mikael Samuelsson. Samuelsson took an off-angle shot from the left circle and got his own rebound, putting it back in on the net. Cleary tipped the attempt and the puck slipped past Fernandez for the game’s final goal.

Hasek needed to make only 20 saves to earn the shutout, his fourth of the season. Fernandez made the same number of stops on 23 shots against.

Detroit’s power play goal came on one of their five chances with the man-advantage. Minnesota had only one power play attempt on the night.

The Red Wings will be back in action on Saturday night when they host the San Jose Sharks.
