On the first day of training camp, the Detroit Red Wings made the announcement fans had been waiting for all summer: A new contract for defenseman Moritz Seider.

The seven-year deal carries a $8.55 million salary cap hit, falling right in the expected range.
What surprises me is that the deal is seven years rather than eight, as the one Lucas Raymond signed last week is. I’m curious if this is a matter of Seider trying to hit free agency sooner or Detroit GM Steve Yzerman not wanting Seider and Raymond to hit free agency at the same time again, or a combination of the two.
Seider has been practicing in Germany and is expected to make his way to Traverse City for training camp with the deal done.
