Kane Signs Extension with Red Wings

Forward Patrick Kane is staying put, signing a one-year contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings just before he would have become a free agent.

The deal is reportedly for $4 million with another $2.5 million in performance bonuses.

Kane’s departure seemed inevitable as of locker clean-out day at the end of the season but the two sides were able to reach a deal.

The 35-year-old scored at a nearly-point-per-game pace after joining the Red Wings in December, coming off of offseason hip surgery.  His twenty goals in fifty games were good for fourth on the team and his forty-seven points put him at sixth in scoring.

I made my feelings on Kane known when the Red Wings originally signed him.  This is money and a roster spot that I wish had gone to someone else.  Maybe there was no one else.  Maybe anyone else would have been more money.  We’ll probably never know.
