For the first time since 2017, the Detroit Red Wings are headed outdoors, as they’ll be the visitors in a 2025 Stadium Series matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Ohio Stadium.
The game will be played on March 1, 2025.
The league has not officially announced the matchup but a report by The Athletic confirms information DetroitHockey.Net had previously been told confidentially.
It will be Detroit’s fifth outdoor game, which ties them for fourth-most of all NHL teams. Other than the New York Rangers – who have played multiple times outdoors in New York City as the visiting team due to their lease at Madison Square Garden – the Red Wings are the only team to have been scheduled to five outdoor games while only hosting one.
Prior to this, the Blue Jackets were one of three NHL teams not to have been scheduled in an outdoor game. The Arizona Coyotes and Florida Panthers are the two that remain.
In 2009, the Red Wings were the visitors in the league’s second Winter Classic, hosted by the Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field. The league is headed back to Wrigley for the 2025 Winter Classic, with Chicago hosting the St. Louis Blues. Detroit hosted their own Winter Classic in Ann Arbor’s Michigan Stadium in 2014 – originally scheduled for 2013 but cancelled due to the NHL’s lockout of the NHLPA – against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Then the Red Wings were back on the road for a 2016 Stadium Series game at Denver’s Coors Field against the Colorado Avalanche and the Centennial Classic in 2017 against the Maple Leafs at Toronto’s BMO Field.
Detroit captain Dylan Larkin is the only player left on the Red Wings’ roster from that 2017 game.
