Coming off a 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday, the Detroit Red Wings rebounded with a 5-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets Tuesday night.

Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard made 28 saves for his 19th career shutout.

Tomas Tatar opened the game’s scoring with 9:43 left in the first period. After a scramble that saw Tatar corral a loose puck to keep control for the Wings the puck came out to the blue line. Columbus netminder Sergei Bobrovsky stopped Jonathan Ericsson’s shot from the point but Tatar put home the rebound.

The Blue Jackets thought they had tied things up with a power play goal in the closing minutes of the period but Boone Jenner was ruled to have kicked the puck in and the goal was called back.

Gustav Nyquist scored from the side of the net on a Detroit power play at 1:44 of the second period, putting the rebound of a Johan Franzen shot from the high slot past Bobrovsky.

Tomas Jurco added another power play goal at 4:49 of the third period to make it 3-0, snapping a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle into the top corner of the net.

Just 1:12 later, Riley Sheahan made it 4-0. After Justin Abdelkader looped through the Columbus zone protecting the puck, he moved it on to Tatar in the slot, who passed it off to a streaking Brendan Smith coming down the left side, who quickly moved it on to Sheahan for a tap-in from the top of the crease.

With 1:01 remaining, Darren Helm closed out the scoring, whipping a shot from the left faceoff dot past Bobrovsky.

Bobrovsky finished the night with 35 saves on 40 shots against.

Detroit finished the night with two power play goals on five chances with the extra attacker. Columbus was scoreless on three power play attempts.

The Red Wings continue their road trip on Thursday in Winnipeg.

Detroit was without forward Pavel Datsyuk, who missed the game with a flare-up of his previous groin injury… Andrej Nestrasil and Jakub Kindl were healthy scratches for the Red Wings.
