The Detroit Red Wings announced on Tuesday the assignment of forward Stephen Weiss to the Grand Rapids Griffins on a conditioning stint.
Weiss has played in just one game this season. He made 26 appearances for Detroit during the 2013-14 campaign, his first with the club, before hernia surgery ended his season early.
The former Plymouth Whaler, 31, was Florida’s fourth-overall selection in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He signed with the Red Wings as a free agent during the summer of 2013.
Weiss joins a Griffins club one game into a four-game homestand. Grand Rapids hosts the Rockford IceHogs on Wednesday, then the Chicago Wolves on Friday and the following Wednesday.
