Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist was named to the Swedish Olympic team on Monday, replacing injured teammate Johan Franzen.
Franzen withdrew from the competition due to concussion symptoms. He has played one game since December 15 and is not expected to return to the Red Wings before the Olympic break.
In thirty games this season, Nyquist has 13 goals and nine assists for 22 points. The day before being named to Sweden’s roster he scored a hat trick and added an assist in Detroit’s 6-5 overtime loss to the Washington Capitals.
With Nyquist replacing Franzen, the Red Wings will be represented by ten players in Sochi, including six Swedes. Detroit captain any Nyquist linemate Henrik Zetterberg will also captain the Swedish squad.
