DeKeyser Goes on LTIR, Red Wings to Call Up Nyquist

With defenseman Danny DeKeyser having been placed on long-term injured reserve, the Detroit Red Wings announced that they will call up forward Gustav Nyquist for Thursday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

DeKeyser was injured early in the first period against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday, suffering a separated shoulder from a hit into the end boards by Patric Hornqvist. He is expected to miss three to six weeks.

Long-term injured reserve allows for salary cap relief when a player is called up to replace the injured player. As such, the Red Wings now have enough cap space to bring Nyquist up from the Grand Rapids Griffins. After 15 games, Nyquist is the AHL’s fifth-leading scorer but the Red Wings have been unable to call him up as they haven’t been able to fit him under the cap.

Nyquist was a cap casualty out of training camp, sent to the Griffins because he wouldn’t have to clear waivers. He can play only one more game for Detroit before he would have to clear waivers to be sent back to the Griffins.

To maximize the cap space created by DeKeyser going on long-term injured reserve, the Red Wings called up Trevor Parkes from the Toledo Walleye on Wednesday. He’ll swap places with Nyquist after the Griffins’ Wednesday-night game against the Milwaukee Admirals.
