One night after a 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Detroit Red Wings were held scoreless in a 2-0 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. It was Detroit’s second game of their eight-game preseason schedule.

The Red Wings played without Johan Franzen, who was kept out of the lineup with a hip flexor. They also lost the services of forwards Teemu Pulkkinen and MItch Callahan. Both were ejected for boarding, with Pulkkinen out just 2:16 in to the game and Callahan at 2:20 of the second period.

Patrick Sharp and Ben Smith scored just 1:09 apart late in the middle period to provide all the game’s scoring. Sharp snapped a shot past Detroit goalie Jonas Gustavsson with 3:23 remaining and Smith deflected a chance by Jimmy Hayes with 2:14 left.

Gustavsson finished the night with 21 saves on 23 shots in two periods of play. Jared Coreau stopped all 11 shots he faced in the third period. Corey Crawford made 19 saves to earn the shutout for Chicago.
