At a press conference prior to the team’s Red and White Game at Plymouth’s Compuware Arena on Tuesday, the Detroit Red Wings named forward Henrik Zetterberg the team’s new captain.
Zetterberg replaces defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom, who retired over the summer. He is the team’s 36th captain.
Zetterberg was named an alternate captain along with Kris Draper when Lidstrom took over as captain after Steve Yzerman’s retirement in 2006. He’s worn the A ever since, though it’s been a three-man rotation in recent years with Pavel Datsyuk having been added and then Niklas Kronwall taking Draper’s spot.
There is no word on whether the Red Wings will continue to rotate the alternate captaincy among three players or whether Datsyuk and Kronwall will serve as Zetterberg’s only alternates.
