Game Thread: Red Wings at Blues – 12/5
Still reeling from a 3-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks last night, the Red Wings return home to host the St. Louis Blues in Detroit’s annual New Year’s Eve game.
If that setup sounds familiar, it should. The Wings and Blues met in Detroit on Tuesday. Additionally, this will be the fourth New Year’s Eve meeting between the two teams since 1997.
Detroit coach Mike Babcock has said there will be no lineup changes for the Wings, meaning Jimmy Howard starts in goal again and the kid line of Cory Emmerton, Joakim Andersson and Gustav Nyquist will stay together.
Game time is 7:00 on FSD.
Franzen woke up. Damn, that’s a nice goal.
Abdelkader with a hell of a shot after a steal by Miller, then a horrible fight by Commodore. Didn’t need to indulge Crombeen there.
Hudler worked his ass off for that one. Great second effort.

Tonight was the best the Red Wings have played against St. Louis this season and it showed on the scoreboard.
It was the first time in four meetings that Detroit didn’t get bottled up along the boards by the Blues’ puck-pressure. Instead, the Wings had chances from the slot area and were able to get to the net.
Of course, the offense was helped by Jimmy Howard’s stellar goaltending, yet again. In this twelve game home winning streak, he has three shutouts and a GAA well under 2.00.
As I mentioned on Twitter immediately after the game, it’s great to see Justin Abdelkader come back from the quiet room to score a goal and be named the game’s second star. The hit was ugly, though definitely not the worst we’ve seen (helped by the fact that there was no injury). You have to think there will be supplemental discipline but we’ll see.
