  • It’s the Red Wings and the Bruins this afternoon in the NHL’s first annual Thanksgiving Showdown, which means it’s the earliest in the season that I’ve been able to break out my usual complaint about afternoon games.

I say this every season, usually multiple times: The afternoon is when people have things to do. I can watch hockey at night, I can’t put up my Christmas lights in the dark. But, hey, the NHL can count the TVs of all the people who leave the game on in the background as “viewers” I guess.

Kicking this thread off early so I can get started on what I need to do around the house. I haven’t seen a lineup yet so I’m betting the Wings go with what they used against Calgary on Wednesday. The only certainty is that Fabian Brunnstrom was allowed to stay home as his wife is expecting their first child.

The Bruins are on a ten-game winning streak while the Wings are 7-3 in their last ten.

Game time is 1:00 PM on NBC.

  • Wings looking like they forgot its a 1:00 start again.

  • Lets see if that kill can lead to something for the Wings.

  • Damn, the PKs have been really frikkin good. I miss this.

Of course, as was pointed out by @jmwall24 pointed out, the Wings are playing the most penalized team in the NHL and have the only penalties of the game.

  • This weekend, I am thankful that Pavel Datsyuk made me forget how awful the play leading to Boston’s first goal was. Great pass by Bertuzzi but it takes a special player to kick the puck up like that to get it to his stick.

  • Better period but the special teams broke things up a bit. Bruins have a ton of energy, we’ll see what the third brings.

  • Ugly giveaway. Commonality between the two Boston goals.

  • Two important points. Not thrilled with how it happened but I’ll take it. Now back to Christmas decorating, postgame notes later.

  • I, for one, am happy with the win…and I’m so relieved that the Wings, unlike the yesterday’s Lions, represented our area with distinction.

  • The inaugural “Thanksgiving Showdown” was a pretty interesting game, as I think you could argue that neither team deserved the win through 60 minutes this afternoon. Then you hit overtime and it’s just back and forth chances, a fantastic five minutes, you think neither team deserves to lose. The Red Wings picking up the extra point in the shootout isn’t something I mind but that game could have ended in a tie and I don’t think anyone would have complained.

It’s weird because the Bruins controlled most of the game but their only goals came off of horrible miscues by Detroit. Jimmy Howard and Henrik Zetterberg’s uncharacteristic giveaways were the only way Boston was able to get on the board.

At the other end of the ice, the Red Wings were limited in their chances and never really got much going, but still managed to score twice.

Detroit nearly won almost entirely based on their defensive effort but shot themselves in the foot enough to deserve to lose. The Bruins played well enough to win easily but their scoring doesn’t show it.
