Postgame: Stars @ Red Wings – 11/12

Tonight started off looking like one of those nights where a backup goalie comes up against Detroit and suddenly looks like a Vezina candidate but the Red Wings kept pressuring and finally broke through in the third period.

The Wings pretty much dominated this one. The Stars only got a handful of chances in the game but they capitalized on them in the first two periods, putting themselves in position to get a win before Detroit’s big breakthrough in the third.

You could see that this game was kind of a natural progression from where the Wings were on Friday night. Not a perfect game but much cleaner. Franzen’s game-winner was a bit of a garbage goal but the others were off of really nice setups or were just great shots. Those kinds of goals weren’t happening during the Wings’ losing streak (not that many goals were happening in general then).

I was at the wrong end of the ice to clearly see Ian White make a save with his face but that’s an extreme side to how the game had played out in the Detroit end for most of the game. Aside from the Brendan Morrow goal, which was a mess all over, Detroit’s D was in the right place at the right time for most of the night.

Of course, I hate the way the game ended. Jamie Benn jumping Jakub Kindl is the kind of play that needs to get out of the game. Congrats, Benn, you won a fight against someone who had never fought before. That sure showed Detroit.
