Former Red Wing Hossa Lifts Blackhawks over Detroit

Marian Hossa scored the game-winning goal in overtime Monday night, lifting the Chicago Blackhawks to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Hossa was a Red Wing for the 2008-09 season before moving on to Chicago as a free agent.

Hossa took a feed from Patrick Kane and blasted a shot from the inside edge of the left faceoff circle past Joey MacDonald to give the ‘Hawks the win 51 seconds into overtime. The goal came with the Blackhawks skating on a four-on-three.

Chicago had opened the game’s scoring just 2:54 into the first period, when Troy Brouwer held the puck in at the Detroit blue line and sent it down low to an undefended Jonathan Toews for a wrister past MacDonald.

After Todd Bertuzzi was ejected for elbowing Ryan Johnson in the head and Hossa was sent off for slashing, Nicklas Lidstrom fired a shot from just inside the blue line to tie the game up at 7:36, while the teams skated four aside.

Brent Seabrook put the Blackhawks back in front with 6:42 left in the period, taking a cross-crease pass from Kane and banging the puck into the open side of the net on a Chicago power play.

Henrik Zetterberg made it 2-2 at 2:25 of the third period when he threw the puck on net from the bottom of the right faceoff circle and it deflected past goalie Corey Crawford for a power play goal.

Detroit finished the night one-for-four on the power play while Chicago went two-for-five.

MacDonald made 38 saves on 41 shots in the Red Wings’ crease. Crawford stopped 33 of the 35 chances he faced.
