The Detroit Red Wings announced on Monday that they have signed head coach Mike Babcock to a four-year extension, keeping him with the team through the 2014-15 season.
Babcock is currently in his sixth season with the team, having come to Detroit following the lockout that cost the NHL the 2004-05 season.
Before that he coached the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for two seasons, leading them to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003.
With Detroit, Babcock has a regular season record of 259-101-52 and was the first coach in NHL history to lead his team to consecutive 50-win seasons in his first four years. His Red Wings have made the playoffs all five years, reaching the finals twice with one championship.
He also led Team Canada to the gold medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
