Red Wings Sign Maltby to Three-Year Extension

The Detroit Red Wings announced on Friday that they have signed veteran forward Kirk Maltby to a three-year contract extension.

The deal will pay Maltby $2.65 million.

Maltby has been with the Red Wings since 1996, when he was acquired for Dan McGillis from the Edmonton Oilers. He was thrilled to be remaining with the team.

“Definitely happy, extremely happy,” Maltby said. “Proud, and so fantastic we could get this done. I wanted to stay here. That was the ultimate goal.”

As Red Wings general manager Ken Holland does not negotiate contracts during the playoffs, this deal was reached before the start of the postseason.

“We worked it out a few days before the playoffs began, and not that my signing would be much of a distraction heading into the playoffs, but we knew the media would find out about it sooner or later,” Maltby said.
