Red Wings Tie Team Record with Ninth-Straight Win

The Detroit Red Wings tied a franchise record Tuesday night, extending their winning streak to nine games with a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Johan Franzen’s shorthanded goal at 6:19 of the third period gave Detroit the win.

The Red Wings got on the board first at 4:36 of the second period, when Valtteri Filppula carried the puck out from behind the net and turned to put a shot on Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo. Luongo lost his stick and was disoriented as the puck bounced off defender Patrick Coulombe and into the net.

The Canucks responded 3:13 later with a power play goal by Henrik Sedin. It was the first goal allowed by Detroit netminder Dominik Hasek in three games, ending his shutout streak at a personal-best 181:17.

Just 1:28 into the third, Detroit pulled ahead again when Henrik Zetterberg roofed a shot from in close over Luongo but the game was tied again 30 seconds later, after Kevin Bieksa put a one-timer past Hasek.

After Franzen’s goal put Detroit in front, an apparent tying goal for Vancouver was called back on a Jan Bulis goaltender interference penalty.

Detroit was once again held without a power play goal, failing to capitalize on five chances. They held the Canucks to one goal on six tries with the extra attacker.

Hasek made 18 saves on 20 shots while Luongo stopped 30 of 33 shots against.

The Red Wings will look to set a new franchise record winning-streak on Friday in Calgary.
