Red Wings Extend Streak to Four Games

The Detroit Red Wings held off a late comeback by the Calgary Flames to pick up their fourth-straight win Wednesday night. Like the other three in the run, it was a one-goal win.

Brett Lebda’s third period goal held up as the game-winner. With 8:36 remaining in the period, Lebda carried the puck down the right wing before cutting in front of defender Andrei Zyuzin and using him as a screen, putting a shot over the glove of Calgary goalie Miikka Kiprusoff to give Detroit a 3-1 lead.

Andrew Ference pulled Calgary back within a goal with 2:07 remaining, scoring on a bouncing shot that skipped over Detroit netminder Dominik Hasek’s glove.

The Flames were unable to score on a short 6-on-4 in the final minute as the Wings held on to get the win.

Detroit had opened the scoring with two quick goals in the first period.

Johan Franzen scored 4:29 into the game after a Calgary turnover forced by Chris Chelios. Chelios got the puck to Franzen in the slot and he put a quick shot into the back of the net.

Just 1:19 later, Tomas Holmstrom scored his third goal in the last two games, knocking the rebound of a Jason Williams shot between Kiprusoff’s legs with Detroit on the power play.

The Flames got on the board with 7:31 remaining in the opening period when Dion Phaneuf picked up a power play goal.

Detroit finished the night 1-for-6 on the power play and stopped two of Calgary’s three chances with the man-advantage.

Hasek stopped 13 of 15 Calgary shots while Kiprusoff made 31 saves on 34 shots against.

The Red Wings will be back in action on Thursday night when they visit Chicago. As it will be the second game in as many nights, Chris Osgood is expected to get the start in the Detroit crease.
