Red Wings down Stars for Second-Straight Win

The Detroit Red Wings’ penalty killers came to life at just the right time Friday night, holding off a four-minute Dallas Stars’ power play in the third period to help claim a 4-3 win.

After allowing three power play goals to Dallas, the Red Wings finally clamped down defensively after rookie Tomas Kopecky went off for a double-minor after high-sticking Jaroslav Modry at 2:58 of the final frame. They kept up the effort for the rest of the game and kept the Stars off the board, holding onto their one-goal lead.

The Stars never led the game but their power play kept them close.

Jiri Hudler opened the scoring for Detroit just 1:55 into the game but Mike Modano evened things back up 47 seconds later.

With 2:13 remaining in the first, Nicklas Lidstrom put Detroit back out in front, only to have the lead disappear when Jussi Jokinen scored 27 seconds into the second.

Pavel Datsyuk put in a rebound after a Dallas turnover in their own zone at 2:09 of the middle period and Lidstrom added Detroit’s lone power play goal on a 5-on-3 at 8:32.

Modano scored with 7:47 remaining in the period but the Stars were unable to even things up.

Detroit finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play while Dallas went 3-for-7.

Red Wings’ netminder Dominik Hasek made 17 saves on 20 shots. Marty Turco stopped 29 of 33 shots against.

The Red Wings will be back in action Saturday night when they visit the St. Louis Blues.
